Neil Gaiman's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader" part 1(BATMAN 686) will be released next week(instead next ths week). Then, part 2(DETECTIVE COMICS 853) will be shipped a month after(MARCH 18 ).

Well, I can't help it. Good thing they're both over-sized(at least 34-38 pages of story), which could be a valid excuse. Confused

A shame. I really loved Moore's "Whatever Happened...", and if Gaiman's up to snuff with his version and maintained the resonant poignancy of Moore's Superman classic, I may actually buy it.

Read the Secret Invasion tie-in of that. Like most SI tie-ins, it was excellent. And HOLY HELL, STARJAMMERS. And I will read anything with Blackbolt in it. I don't know how Nova and that psycho Darkhawk will figure into it, but I will definitely make a topic once it comes out this March.

You mean THIS?

'Course you fellows would rather buy the issue when it comes out. You probably don't want spoilers or anything, but poor/ excited people like me can read the preview over here.[/img]

Yeah! The one with that cover! I like it better than Alex Ross's. I hope that cover is not pricey. Very Happy

Topic not related:

I've read from Morrison Exit Interview part 2 at NEWSARAMA that GM's returning to BATMAN on June. I didn't expect he would be back that soon.

Wow. I am...not sure what this feeling is. I'll hold my opinions until the whole thing's out. Just...

Alfred.

And mother careless whisper Joe Chill.

I do have a question though. The panel with the car-watch kid mumbling that Joker's going to kill him, who are the three people entering the place? I'm thinking cape-guy is Ra's. Who's the small kid? And the guy with the shades?

The kid is Damian, Bruce's alleged son. And the one with shades might be the White Ghost, Ra's al Ghul's son (supposing that the story doesn't consider some recent continuity events).

For some reason, I was expecting Damien to be in the Robin outfit. Or something. That's why I didn't recognize him.

Where the hell is Tim?

I don't expect Damian to be in a Robin suit because it may cause some anomaly with BFTC, especially now that it's not starting yet....

Um...I don't know. It was nice, I guess. Ish 2, that is. I just think it...I dunno. No words for it. Not awesome, just okay.

Surprisingly not as bad as I thought it would be since I have no more faith in Neil Gaiman and his comics writing skills.

Not bad, but not awesome either. He's not really in par with his mentor except for his Sandman volumes (the original ones, not the money-milking schemes afterwards).

I was impressed. It maintained the emotional tone of the Moore classic. It wasn't hamfisted in execution, didn't seem contrived. Gaiman's prose is spare and unpretentious. Nothing like the sometimes heavy-handed emotional butter of Straczynski. Kubert's art here is evocative of our favorite Batman stories (Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, etc.) while still refraining from direct reference. The paneling were works of art.

It wasn't awesome, that's for sure. Awesome's reserved for the huge-ass explosion that leveled thirteen Gotham City blocks, for the climactic face-off with the Joker on top of the GCPD Central with the night wind screaming in your ears; awesome's a label for the epic boss battle escrima with Ra's in the middle of the Gobi desert or for the skyline cat and mouse with Selina Kyle.

But this didn't have those, did it?

I present you a Batman story without all the superfluous--yet still greatly entertaining--aspects that sometimes take center stage. No fireworks, no fisticuffs, no gratuitous careless whisper; just a simple Batman story about what makes the Dark Knight tick, what keeps him going and what's his place in DC continuity. The Omega Sanction doesn't matter, loopy Gaiman mysticism doesn't matter; this is a story that doesn't answer any questions, or even aimed to ask them in the first place. It's a study of the mythic Batman, with none of the continuity ties and historical back issues that bogs a prolific character such as himself.

The deaths might be incongruous, the character portrayals might be wonky. The Bats might be a psychotic senior citizen with a death wish, a campy pop culture icon with a pot belly, a grizzled urban war veteran or a sleek, debonair tactician with contingency plans wrapped up in contingency plans.

There is only one constant.

He's a vigilante fighting an endless and tireless war on crime.

Good night, Batman.

Hello, Batman.

Sorry, Joseph. I thought you've already read it the time I sent you a text message.

The issue is really entertaining. I thought I would have my own copy yesterday but there were enough issues on the shelf.

'Goodnight Batcave. Goodnight mechanical dinosaur. Goodnight giant penny.'
