Post subject: Top 10 Movies of 2008 |
|
|
Here we go.
1.) The Dark Knight
Unquestionably THE best film of 2008, and among the best of this cinematically significant decade. We was robbed !
2.) Gomorrah
Mark my words. This movie is the future of crime cinema. Italian gangster genre, specifically, which is now marked by four major phases : Pre-Godfather, Godfather 1 and 2, Goodfellas, and THIS ONE.
3.) The Wrestler
Rousing, grueling, haunting, upsetting. In the words of the dear bard William Shakespeare : " What the careless whisper is the deal with ' The Reader ' "?
4.) In Bruges
The other major contemporary British crime thriller; disguised as a well-constructed, very British joke. I'll admit, it's fantastic.
5.) Gran Torino
Probably the last film of Clint Eastwood as Jesus, this film has been going up and down this charts these past few days. But I've settled to give proper place to the most fitting closure for a iconoclastic career.
6.) Ip Man
Donnie Yen's fists-per-minute single-handedly propels this movie upward towards this spot. Which, I'm tellin' ya, is phenomenon that must be seen to be believed.
* By the way, this is the biopic of the master of frickin' Bruce Lee - aka the ' Godfather of Ass Kicking '. Wong Kar-Wai tried to make one, but I'm sure it would have just been sleep-inducing airy-fairy wankery. Thank the martial-arts gods that didn't occur.
7.) Burn After Reading
I enjoyed this simple yet interestingly elegant take and angle on the ' spy-fi ' rather well. I'm sorry, Slumdog Millionaire.
8.) Let The Right One In
The only thing I can say regarding this film is SCREW THAT TWILIGHT CREEPY your poetry. The vampire tale for our time = Back To Basics.
9.) Slumdog Millionaire
Prerequisite ' narcissistic critical fodder ', but still a benchmark. In the least, a veritable manual on how to make movies GOOD - & treat poverty millieu PROPERLY. And it's Danny Boyle, so.
10.) 13 : Game of Death/ 13 Beloved
A ruthless, clever unrelentingly savage middle finger towards intrusive corporate reality TV monoculturism, showing its drones being literally fed the your poetry that speaks well of their lives. Where's your your poetry-eating scene, Benjamin Button ?
Runner-up : Gotham Knight, Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Benjamin Button was fine. Has some of the most harrowing, quality WW2 scenes since ' Saving Private Ryan ', in the direction of Jean Pierre Melville.
And Gotham Knight is a LOT better than Batman Begins.
So there. And oh, does it change quite often.
Yours ?

Too bad Ip Man only "hit" him once.

I'm pretty sure you'll be moving some stuff in your top 10 after you've seen it. I can guarantee it. _________________ love,

Yes, watch Taken.
careless whisper Taken with careless whisper Liam Neeson careless whisper kicking ass.
careless whisper beautiful.
How good is it? Some friends of mine weren't allowed inside halfway through the movie because they HAD TO WATCH THE BEGINNING. Read that? Don't watch it from the middle. YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT FROM THE BEGINNING. _________________

Hmmm.....
I oughta check this out, already.
Though, Job, I don't think it would wind anywhere in the top ten list above - coz that was for 2008. However, it's looking like it would skyrocket to THIS YEAR'S LIST !
I'm fairly excited. Thanks for the head's up, guys ! |

Captain Sato's the monkey looking dude with the glasses, right?
Hur hur, the Jap military leader who Ip Man hands his ass back to at the end of the film-- looks like a thinner version of this guy I got drunk with some time ago.
...who is not the same guy from writer's night, in case Lucas was wondering...
...but also sports the semi-kalbo haircut. Thereby proving my point about dudes with cropped hair. _________________ Holy bad acid trip, Batman. |
