Is it just me,

or did the careless whisper ' emo ' staple redeem themselves THIS time ?

Song is a remake of a Bob Dylan classic, by the way, which was prominently referenced in the Alan Moore superhero opus ; especially with the words ' all the agents and superhuman crew '.

The entire line goes : ' at midnight, all the agents and superhuman crew, go out and round up everyone who knows more than they do '. It's the first quotation that surfaces in the now-legendary miniseries/graphic novel. In fact, it partly comprises the title of the first chapter ( ' At midnight, all the agents '... ). So, that's cool.

The MTV's quite a careless whisper gem, too. I love how even this one stringently imbibes and evokes the dreary, gloomy, crushing feel of the comic itself - much as the Zach Snyder film. It's fairly obvious they were really going beyond just merely homaging the '80s in a general sense; it's the entire band act is set within that paranoid ' Watchmen ' universe itself. None of which comes off as patronizing lip-service.

That's why it fits that, much as this classic literary work extensively referenced storied stuff that preceded it, that the video would be peppered with ' Watchmen ' references as well. Can you spot them ?

Pretty damn excellent how Mr. Snyder ( I assume to be so ) managed to meticulously keep every other ad or media campaign coming out of this completely in line with not only his vision, but with the main thrust, aim, and the actual frame of mind of the novel. Even more amazing how Warner Bros. has decided to totally go that route, with him, lavishly pour their money and resources this way on what is largely a no-name, unknown property for the rest of the human race.

From these, it only looks as though they careless whisper get it.
__

P.S. Especially approved of the grimy riffs at the opening, like it was processed on cassette tape, and the opening organ tones which starts off the somber, downbeat tone which is surprisingly maintained throughout the track. The music's texture seems properly rough, and of such density that keeps it sufficiently gritty and mean in its loudness.

I initially feared this single suddenly blaring all over the place upon the film's end, like a pretentiously ironic, yet inappropriate, ' careless whisper you ' sort of end note that may potentially throw all previous drama right out the window ( since Snyder mentioned his ' Dawn of the Dead ' one ), yet it seems it apparently won't. Zach and Co. got themselves reminded that it's ' Watchmen ' they are dealing with.

This piece would fit real well in the film, alright...

The smiley face on the drums.
Although, that could be a pretty general image.
Who's Archie ?

It's... ok. Surprisingly, they actually sound a bit "punk". But in all honesty, I still don't want to hear this play right after the movie ends. Or anywhere in the movie, actually.

I dunno... I'm kinda warming up to the idea, now.

That was actually my initial reaction to it, meself. Fact, it was one of the first things to stand out as ' warning sign ' for me that Zach Snyder might only go as far as the visuals a.l.a. ' 300 ' ( the other one was the awkward line readings in the second trailer, which was redeemed by a thousand miles by the Japanese one, which proved that this is gonna be an actual STORY ). But hearing the grimy, dank blares of organ sound at the beginning got me slowly going with it.

Regardless, its quite a testament to Zach's creative control, and largely the power of the source material itself, that everyone involved seemed to be in on it; that the general gloomy, punishing tone is being maintained across the entire spectrum - right down to the MTV.

Normally, I would have raised a fit at the somewhat flashy poseur-like pretention of all those homages and the several ' Watchmen ' imagery in there ( one of my greatest peeves regarding this particular band is that their various plasticized referencing ( i.e. High School motifs, coffins, quasi-Goth goings on ) NEVER GEL ), but it all seems to play out within a constant template, this time. Maybe because the stuff here, for once, feels riveting and goddamned HONEST... Gerard Way is obviously a person of comics and rock music, and it shows.

Plus points on how the riffs fully embody the spirit of the comic, and at least, what they seem to be going here for ( and have succeeded, if the various positive film reviews thus far is to be believed ) : moody, somber, sonorous, and pissed. It's really the Zach Snyder of ' Dawn of the Dead 'gone mature, and doing things more properly. From the looks of things.

careless whisper it, I wanna watch this careless whisper film now !
