PostPost subject: Comic Book Movie Rankings Reply with quote

So after thinking about it and looking at the rankings of anonymous people on the internet after seeing Watchmen, I ranked all the comic-book movies I've seen in their entirety. The dashes are there to show a "gap" in how much I think of the movie.

1. The Dark Knight
-
2. Iron Man
3. Batman Begins
4. Spider-Man 2
-
5. Spider-Man
6. V for Vendetta
7. Sin City
-
8. Watchmen
9. X2
10. Batman Returns
-
11. Hellboy
12. 300
13. X-Men
14. Blade II
-
15. Spider-Man 3
16. Blade
-
17. Superman Returns
18. Hulk (2003)
19. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
20. Batman Forever
21. The Punisher (2004)
-
22. Blade Trinity
23. Fantastic Four
24. X3
-
25. Batman and Robin

TDK still stands undisputed as the best I've ever seen. The next three are all extremely good and are just about equal in quality. The three after that are just a step down but all still great films. The other three are still quality films but with flaws.

And I'm sure people will be questioning my placement of Batman Returns here but the sheer enjoyment I have in seeing Burton's much more twisted version of Batman (which some don't even consider the real Batman with what he does in the film) and the fact that it's one of the first I've seen and helped draw me into the character really helps (thank you, nostalgia). That and Pfeiffer's Catwoman.

The next four are films that I "enjoy" and while I still enjoyed Spider-Man 3 and Blade, SM3 had glaring flaws while the first Blade had its dull parts. The tier below is "meh" material and the tier below that falls into the "augh" category.

Batman and Robin is on a tier of its own because it's so bad it's good.

How about you guys? I didn't include animated movies here but you guys can go ahead and do so.

My List :

[ EDITED 5/02/09 ]

1.) The Dark Knight ( 2008 )
2.) American Splendor ( 2003 )
3.) Oldboy ( 2004 ) - Park-Cheung Won excellence. Still remain
a bit preturbed by how it buried all it's socio-
economical/ socio-political commentary,
and shabbily threw it away in favor of
a mere story of voyeurism and incest, but man,
what cinematic honesty ! It's practically the first
film I've seen which told THAT type of real gritty,
profound, textured, human drama/ psycho-thriller
story with martial arts ( that did not rationalized the
karate stuff as virtual reality or a careless whisper
hallucination, it's happening, and serves a narrative
purpose ). One that did it without resorting to period
piece, cliched tropes, or pastiche . It's literally the
first, genuinely Asian action movie I've seen which
really went as gut-wrenchingly resonant and
substantial as it did, and leave justified.
A true, post-modernist work, and potential future
for all comic book films.

4.)Gotham Knight( 2008 ) - the Bat-films understood, for the
most part, the characters and the
mythos. Like the Nolan stuff,
this one transcends that understanding.
( Still debating in my head as to whether this ought to indeed be higher than Batman Begins, because this seemed the more flawless, mature, unrestrained film. Brian Azzarello only helps lots. Yet this largely rides on the coattails of the Nolan reboot; so this is like a ' chicken and egg ' thing to me ... )

add : ' The Dark Knight ' did itself good NOT merely following this movie's lead. ' Coz that would have been tall order.

* veering instead into a completely different, hyper-realist direction, and positing it's own, fresh contemporary argument, into putting the mythos in a whole 'nother pedestal...

5.) Tie : Watchmen ( 2008 ) - Damn, what audacity ! ( Though I'm beginning to feel it's what I admire about it more than anything else. The fact that it's the first that dared to graphically portray superhero reality in THAT way. )

X-men 2 ( 2003 ) - Probably one of the most underrrated
films of the decade ( as in, not highly
rated ENOUGH )

6.) Jin Roh ( 1999)

7.) Sin City ( 2005 )

8.) V For Vendetta ( 2006 ) - Still the purest Alan Moore
adaptation.
Though it's flaws annoyed me more than
the Watchmen ( i.e. plasticized British
tropes , etc. )
9.) Batman Begins ( 2005 )

10.) Road to Perdition - Slick perfection. ' Angel of Death ' is probably Tom Hank's last relevant role. Even more relevant than Forrest Gump ! ( Or anything else he's ever done, really. Closest thing to come to this one was in ' Catch Me If You Can '. And that's at least a mile from this one. )

11.) Daredevil Director's Cut ( 2004 ) - It really is awesome. And
it's
appraisal of the character
towards the end interestingly brings
to mind ' The Dark Knight ' quite a
bit. ( Have the nagging feeling the
Nolan movie might ripped it off in
parts, but his was ultimately still
the far superior creation )

12.)Akira ( 1988 )

13.) The Incredibles ( 2004 )
14.) The Incredible Hulk ( 2008 )
15.) Blade 2 ( 2002 )
16.) Female Prisoner Scorpion 2 : Jailhouse 41 ( 1970s )
17.) Hellboy 1 ( 2004 )
18.) Panday 1 ( 1970s ) - Possibly the most significant Pinoy comic
book film of all time. I actually like this
movie. Also for its unparalleled cultural
and sociological merit ( seriously, how
many other comic book films got its lead
elected president ? )
19.) Spiderman 1 ( 2002 ) - Pure and real. Plain and simple.
20.) Wanted ( 2008 )
21.) Batman Returns ( 1992 ) - This was my personal ' greatest
superhero film of all time ' before Spiderman
1 happened.
Especially enjoyed the juxtaposition of pulpy,
40's/50's millieu with '90s era grit. Edgy,
and groundbreaking in its self-awareness. I
must say.
22.) Spiderman 2 ( 2002 )
23.) Riki-Oh ( 1990 ) - It's gore-fu will punish the guilty and
convert the heathens to the religion of
meat.
24.) Fudoh ( 1996 ) - Guns, shooting, and mayhem. Very
pleased.

25.) Battle Royale ( 2000 ) - Used to love this film to bits, but it's whole melodramatic tweener self-absorption just puts me off. The whole ' students killing each other ' bit can only go so far; especially when done from a very mendicant, institutionalized standpoint, where these foolish, infantile, high school-level pissings ( crushes, gossip, crap like that ) are suppose to matter more than they actually do, hate with it and not ON it, and we're suppose to feel sorry for these kiddos in THAT sense. And it obviously revels in the DEATHS of thse students, anyways, so that's kind of hypocritical.

School is your poetry prison, and an illegitimate social milieu, and we should burn down all that it's stands for. THAT'S supposed to be the point, right ?

But an iconic cultural milestone, is an iconic cultural milestone, so that is why this belongs to the list. I don't think any other comic book film , or superhero ones even - that has mattered in recent history, in the same way as this flick. In a cult-y sorta way.

Runner up: Uzumaki ( 2000 ) - Twisted and sick.

WORST COMIC BOOK MOVIES.

Okay, ' Batman and Robin ' is just plain bad. I don't remember myself being able to sit through that entire careless whisper-up of a banality, and even if it's like playing on an adjacent TV right behind me, it pisses me off. Fitting 'coz this is really Joel Schumacher and Hollywood pissing on all ideas.

Tom Wiseau's ' The Room ' - now THAT is fun. This one is a disgrace.

However, X:Men careless whisper Origins : Wolverine is ALL THAT to the 1000000th degree, plus Rothman, yet is arrogant enough to HATE YOU. I think we just declared a ' winnah '.

Runner up Worst :
Superman Returns ( 2006 )
I simply can't get myself to watch Tim Burton's first Batman movie, anymore. Heath Ledger has reduced it to detritus, possibly forever....

Oh, and Bryan Singer's Superman really, really sucks.

Woohoo. List time. I'm not bound by arbitrary numerals, so I'm just going to subscribe to another arbitrary form of ranking by tiering them.

GOD TIER

The Dark Knight
This, ladies and gentlemen, is a Batman movie. Taking the Caped Crusader back to his pulp-detective inspired roots and giving it a good sprinkling of modern sensibilities with just the right amount of realism. This is one of the finest, most technically superior movies I've ever watched. Pretty damn exhausting, too.

Watchmen
Watching it on the cam again, while pausing every now and then to compare certain shots to the comic has been one of the most enjoyable, time-wasting nonsense I've ever done. To think that I'm not even finished yet. Seriously, though, this is one of the (if not, THE) best and most painstakingly meticulous comic-to-movie adaptations to date. Alan Moore might not watch it, sure, but his non-involvement is ultimately self-defeating. Think about it: a Watchmen movie with Alan Moore happy, well-adjusted and on-board. Let it sink in.

Iron Man
Enjoyable piece of smarmy superheroism. Downey is a god among men, and him pulling off Tony Stark with his signature red and gold is a sight to see. Plot was disarmingly simple, and it drew you into that Marvel world of decidedly optimistic ultra-realism. Not a brilliant movie, by far, but a damn fun one nonetheless.

Batman: Return of the Joker
Batman as a legacy character will not be complete without the plaque-infested simper of his infamous foil. The Return of the Joker was a brilliant deconstruction of the Batman-Joker dynamic, a formidable character springboard for Terry McGinnis and the careless whisper SCARIEST incarnation of the Joker I have laid eyes on. If you haven't watched this masterpiece of western animation, then consider yourself schooled.

AWESOME TIER

Superman 2 and all its subsequent cuts
It's a given that Christopher Reeve did a brilliant job of portraying the bungling, socially awkward Clark Kent and the stawart demigod that is Superman. The second movie gripped me better than the first since Zod was such a glorious manga by Kazushi Hagiwara!!.

Incredibles
Watchmen for kids. Seriously, think about it. In the past there were masks out stopping crime and likened by the public. Then your poetry hit the fan (most likely people dying due to wearing capes). Masks are banned but the main protagonist still goes out at night and fights crime. At some point main protagonist is made aware that someone is killing off masks. Everyone gets together by the end to try and stop this killer and his plan to unleash a tentacled monster into the city. But it's too late and all hell breaks loose. Blow your mind yet?

V for Vendetta
First viewing, I found it to be too British for my tastes. I could understand, like, every third word they were saying. But with DVD on hand, volume turned high and subtitles streaming, I was amazed at how true to the Moore spirit it was. Didn't really follow the comics' subplots, but it retained the message.

Wonder Woman
A Bruce Timm movie, at its absolute finest. Despite a rocky start with New Frontier and Superman: Doomsday, DCU Original Animated has been rallying with the Gotham Knight release and finally this gem of a movie. It's everything you would expect of Timm: great voice acting, magnificent fight sequences and brutal character rapport, a wrapped up in an accessible plot and in the character designs we've all grown to love. If this level of quality is maintained, Green Lantern: First Flight will be excellent.

GOOD TIER

Road to Perdition
A gangster movie. Tom Hanks was contemplative and distant, which was a good plus. Tried to break free of the stereotypical mold by presenting an almost ethereal, London-like ambiance; succeeded as the world they were moving in retained a whiff of nostalgia and of cigarette smoke in the rain. Veered too much from the graphic novel, which was a good thing at times.

Spider-Man 1 & 2
Hidden behind the gratuitous motion-captured SFX and aerialist bravura is a tight plot and a classic love story. Laid the groundwork for the definitive Marvel superhero movie.

X2
SNIKT BUB SNIKT BUB
Seriously though, this was probably the last good Wolverine movie. The Wolvie subplot, juxtaposed with the now palpable discrimination messages made this movie contextually heavy while staying true to the defining Claremont character quirks. The polarizing cast bogged it down sadly.

[Will continue this later]

Putsa, nakalimutan ko eto. Son of a womanly cur !

To think na mas natandaan ko pa yung ' Story of Riki ' aka ' Riki-Oh ' bago neto; samantalang sobra ko etong trip di ko pa rin binabalik yung original DVD copy neto roon sa me-ari.

Maybe it's the gore that reminds. Gore solves everything.

David Cronenberg's ' Spider ' was the better work by comparison - it's the second best 2002 film in my personal list - but though I ultimately sorta watched Road To Perdition over this one in theaters, it wasn't like I was sorry...

Jude Law's sick-bag character was careless whisper aces !

( Oh, and it's got the last relevant role of Tom Hanks. And Paul Newman's most gracious bow. )

_

And if I'm gonna be including animation into the mix, might as well put in ' Gotham Knight '. Missed THAT !

1. The Dark Knight - no words appropriate to describe how I feel about this movie.

2. Batman Begins - same here

3. Iron Man - mainly for Downey for making me like A Tony Stark and not THE Tony Stark (I still don't like comic Tony Stark) and making the movie worthwhile.

On a side note: anyone of you seen "A History of Violence?" I like it much. Viggo Mortensen did a wonderful job of shifting from one type of character to another seamlessly. The intimate atmosphere of the movie paired with fear and horror palpable through the film was nicely done by Cronenberg. Must watch the non-HBO version soon since god knows how much HBO edited.

~~~
I'll add more once this headache goes away. Or if I remember.
