Trese's website says that it is a horror/crime comic book. Not exactly; created by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo, it's more of a detective comic richly steeped in Filipino folklore and urban legend, making it a very enticing read. The stark black-and-white art by Kajo fits the atmosphere very well, and the supernatural themes are dealt with excellently -- in the modern world. Think Pinoy Planetary -- the sheer depth of our myths will have you grinning in glee.
Off the top of my head, the only problem is the unnecessary use of Filipino at times, ie, "Gago! A higante can't fit in the banyo!". Granted, the first two words are fine; but banyo? It's almost cringe-worthy.
Issues one through seven can be found on the site. As they're already free there, perhaps some kind member of this forum can grab them and make them into .cbr files for easy reading on CDisplay!
Trese. Taking the ideas you wish you published when you thought of them years ago. Now you never ever can. Ever. _________________ Batman doesn't have any superpowers... except his money. |

I find it too short, but overall an enjoyable read. This is the first time I've gotten my older sister to actually sit down and read a whole compilation.
Kajo's style reminds me of Mignola, but there are areas where he really needs improving. For instance, his characters never look the same for three consecutive frames (hey, I love coming up with random statistics). And the varying quality of his art makes me think he "cheats" sometimes, maybe uses a lightbox or copies from photographs. I say this because in some panels, they look perfect and in others they look pretty bad.
I'm giving him a few years to refine his technique.
Yeah, here I am with art shizz, dayumm. _________________

Copying from photographs isn't really cheating, unless you trace. A lot of artists with photorealistic leanings copy from, well, photos. But, yeah, I agree that Kajo needs a lot of polish. He should stick to the stark black and white style instead of trying to do the sketchy line art. It looks awkward. _________________ love,

Well I meant tracing, yeah, since lightboxes are used for tracing, heh. I'd probably make one to make life easier if I wasn't too lazy.
Oh wait, using photographs in lightboxes might be hard. Oops. _________________

I think I'm probably the only one who wasn't too impressed. As the gravy man already explained, the art was inconsistent at times. That and the dialogue didn't come out as smoothly. I think it's a pet peeve of mine whenever I read Filipino literature in English and I see Tagalog words sprinkled here and there. It just doesn't sound right to me. At least in my head. _________________ the word |

The operative words for that being : " what the careless whisper ? "
It's wierd, being in the country of Taglish, where people can't barely remember words in their own language, that they couldn't even get THAT thing right.
Not to pass judgement on this ' Trese ' thing, coz ... heh. Haven't read it. Yet.

Well, I know artists sometimes copy a stance or pose as a tribute. And if you look closely, the way each artist "filled the blacks" was pretty different. I mean, yeah, he probably did copy the pose, but there's no way he could've gotten the blacks to look like that just by copying.
Pretty uncanny though. _________________

Well.... Finally got around to reading it. And, I'll just say, I thank all the stars that people like Warren Ellis and Alan Moore exist - 'coz I dunno where these creators ( Kajo and Budjette Tan ) would have ended up with had they not.
Other than that, stuff I read was adequate. The lead characters were quite stilted, and were obviously using the pissy British template like how artists depend on the Marvel House style, but it results into functional story-writing and it's fine. Though I really would have wanted the characters to seem more ' Filipino ' in their own right, in ways that are beyond setting, and colloqualisms... ( Alexandra Trese, for example, is an extremely bland variant of the character type shared by Jenny Sparks, New X-men's Emma Frost, Miranda Zero, etc. But at least all of those mentioned bore quirks, had fun, or at least seemed organic. Whereas this one just sort of happens, almost a cypher, walking from A to B or wherever the plot decides to take her to explain something. And all of those mentioned were pretty indigenous to their place of origin. See what's wrong with this picture ? )
I've only read the Seventh ' tiyanak ' issue. And personally, I would have preferred they did something a lot more regarding the subject matter. And there's issues. For example, why would the OBGYNE doctor discard aborted babies in a mall's basement, anyways ? That's like dumping dead bodies next to Jollibee. Wouldn't it be more sensible to at least not do this in a less public, more secluded area, on account of abortions still being an illegal racket ?
Also for example, wouldn't it have been better if the OB-Gyne lady didn't kill ' on the spot ' or was instead literally being followed around by the ghoulish manifestations of her pint-sized victims wherever she would settle; worming themselves into her office buildings, and building de-facto uterus, until they get truly born into the creature they were meant to be ?
That could add further thematic implications and layers to that whole womb aspect, saying that people's places of commerce ( aka offices ) are technically being one, in this case existing at the expense of those it was suppose to benefit and provide for. She supports casually expelling fetuses to foster individual progress, and should therefore be made to bear witness to the manga by Kazushi Hagiwara!! children of that set-up. If Budjette Tan is willing to go all the way with the whole anti-abortion thing in a way that's not the typical Lenten sermonizing ).
I half expected the Dragon guy to be a ' tiyanak ' in his own right. Or the dead babies simply being tiyanak ghosts of a far more gruesome, and sinister nature embedded in the foundation's history itself, looking for a ' mommy '. Anything. What I'm just saying, really, is that the plot elements barely gel together, here, with the killer babies almost coming from the left field and stuff.
Also, it was a wierd read in general. The characters, for example, seem like they're just lounging about in a mall.
But the issue was alright, I guess. It did what it has set out to do : which is to set up these myths of ours in a contemporary, post-millenial landscape and context, in a way that was at least better-dressed.
Might check in again, later. Might. _________________ Gonna trash your careless whisper' lights ! |
