I've been recently casually enthused by a dead webcomic entitled "A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible". The contents of the said webcomic have instilled ample vehemence for me to actually discuss it here. My internet horizon of memes and similar effects needed the archetypal break, which, as some of you know, comes every time an angel grows its tumor. Anyway, "A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible" (conveniently condensed into the acronym, ALILBTDII. as you can see, if you marginally contort your tongue into origami figures, the acronym sounds a lot like "A LIL BT DII", which means virtually nothing.) is one of the rare webcomics that fall under the category of "AMAZING ART AND WRITING, BUT THE AUTHORS ARE EITHER ALREADY SLEEPING WITH THE FISHIES OR SIPPING BANANA-RAMBUTAN MARTINIS IN SOME SEMI-TROPICAL ISLAND INHABITED BY CREATURES LONG FORGOTTEN BY TIME".

Like most webcomics, the style is rather episodic, wherein the protagonists, the ubiquitous authors, Dale and David--last names withheld for fear of being tracked by Catholic bounty hunters--embark on various non-linear escapades. That's where the similarities end, however, since the topics tackled--cleverly veiled under presumably inane humor, scatterbrained verbiage and blithe art--are hardly candidates for sophomoric and/or formulaic garbage (garbage that i enjoy, nonetheless). David, who draws the comics, dedicated conscientious finger grease in the colors, all the while framed within his experimental and (dare i say it?) avant-garde style of comic paneling. The palette varies from vivid to somber and one can just imagine that the duo use a roulette to decide which colors to use for a certain panel. That's not automatically a bad thing. For some alien reason, the formula works, as David consistently spit out gorgeous art. The art style, also shifts, depending on the theme of the week, but readers can be sure that a drastic change of visual style guarantees a lucid significance.

The writing retains a certain ambiguity that may linger on for some weird minutes after you've read a page. You know that kind of ambiguity? The kind that makes you go "blargh" and make you spasm a little? Just a little. Remember now? Yeah, that one. It makes you do that. Don't expect your run-of-the-mill webcomic with its video game in-jokes, awkwardly silent panels, self-referential cracks, lens flare, moar lensflare and forced punchline. Punchlines are SO 90's. At first glance, the whole thing idea seems a mite pretentious and self-referential. It's a given that the writing isn't for everyone, heck, I don't think it's meant for ANYONE in particular. But if you get past the minor spastic gesture and vocal blip, you will not regret wasting ten to fifteen minutes figuring out why the alcoholic man in the bunny suit tried to go home, or why Solipsistic Cat died, leaving behind an entire reality to live according to their own views and values, blahdy, blahdy blah, etcetera, etcetera. If not good reads, they're good BS practice. The comics also include commentary and critique from the makers, if you just scroll down.

So, there. Hope I've influenced you enough to make you just take a look at it. I'm not an expert on it, and what I've said is basically what my puny human mind can comprehend. Maybe some of you could find something that I missed.

A Lesson Is Learned.

I know. It was such a waste of good talent. Check out the forums, man. It's like they're all me, talking simultaneously like some hydra-headed Greek chorus.

I don't know. Do you? The users try to make sense of it all, and they're very erudite about it. Acutely, excessively erudite.

Start with your favorite strip, read the reader-response critiques. Unlike me, though, they're all SRS BZNZ. I think.
