Hai gaiz. It's been ages. Quick aside, is it true the Sinestro corps has shown up in Blackest Night yet? I'm having trouble catching up with continuity since Demonoid decided to die. First Scans_daily withers away, then Demonoid. Where's everyone getting their torrent fix these days?

ON TOPIC. So I was thinking about Joker. I try not to, he gives nightmares, but I can't help it. He's about to make an appearance in current continuity Batman and I'm having trouble bending my mind around him.

So the last, last, last time we've seen Joker, he got shot in the face (early Batman RIP) which became an opportunity for a fairly commendable, credible CHARACTER TRANSFORMATION.

Before and after pictures, hey!

I know I said I didn't like Morrison's RIP, but I read through it again and it started to grow on me. It's not that bad after all. It's... pretty epic, in fact. Besides being like an uninvited acid trip, I'm considering RIP as a transition phase, one that would allow Batman et al to transform. Or something. I mean, after all, we've lost happy psychotic clown with corny jokes Joker, and we now have superelectromagnetic psychotic clown with a forked tongue Joker. In one fell move, he jumped up the scale of creepy frightening, so it stands to reason that when Bruce Wayne Bat comes back, he's going to be on the level. Right? Right.

For some reason, I've grown fond of this new Joker. He seems promising.

Fast forward to post-RIP Gotham. Gotham City Sirens 4 hasn't come out, but I've spotted a few preview panels. Close your eyes, here be spoilers--

So the last time we see the girls, Harley's been waylaid by that FIEND Hush with Bruce Wayne's face. If you haven't read GCS 3, you're missing a beautiful issue with Edward Nigma taking the limelight. Fast forward to GCS 4 and enter the Joker:

What I dont even

Are we supposed to erase what has transpired in RIP from our minds? Is this some Dildio editorial bovine feces? Why so 1994, Joker? And isn't that... I dunno. Something doesn't sit right with me.

After building Joker up in RIP as the second-to-the-final boss in Gotham (with Dr Hurt being the final boss), and having him exit the storyline via Damien taking him out with the Batmobile, I find it suspicious that Joker's going to reappear in a side series like Gotham City Sirens. And he reappears not at the scary thin white duke of death (I see what you did there, David Bowie) but as old joker with the bowtie. This is a WHAT for me.

Logically, because I refuse to accept this version of reality, I'm going to reach for whatever other explanation I can possible find. My theory- brace yourselves-- is that this isn't actually the Joker.

WHICH MAKES PERFECT SENSE IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT. Think about it. We have a Bruce Wayne who is not really Bruce Wayne (but is the FIEND Hush instead). A Batman and Robin who are very, very entertaining but aren't the real Batman and Robin (but is actually Nightwing and Ra's grandson). A Batgirl who should be dead in the first place (Spoiler. Pfft.) Two-face who has become crazier than he normally is. Blackmask is leading Gotham, and we all know his shtick is copying other people's faces. Jane Doe is around somewhere borrowing people's skin. Even Mr. Zsaszzzzz is changing. The whole storyline is saturated by people pretending to be other people! So this Joker may not be the real joker after all!

To top it all off, you guys remember Arkham Asylum (reborn) #1? And the awesomeness that is the inferior inmate Allesio Morandi aka NO FACE? The Painter?

You remember what he looked like when the good Doctor Arkham told him to paint a happy face? Yeah, I thought so.

Or all this could be a stretch, but whatevs, rubes. It makes perfect sense to me.

OR, consider this:

Paul Dini?

He's just being an ass.

I was considering that too, Job. I'm a bit conflicted on this 'cause Dini's proven his mettle. Tried and tested veteran, that Dini. And here's Morrison the upstart punk with the wacky ideas. They've both got their distinct writing styles. I used to hate Morrison until I allowed Post-modernism and Jesus into my heart.

BUT, Morrison controlled RIP and will control BATMAN COMES BACK or REBORN or RETURNS or whatever the hell they plan to call that 'event.' Which is why I'm leaning toward Morrison's version. Dini can wade through his Arkham Asylum video game sponsored pool of money but I'm disregarding his role in Batman Reborn for my own satisfaction. ^_^

At least it's better than Marvel's "It's still the same character, but not really, seriously, believe us, we know what we're doing" modus.

What's stopping comics cognoscenti, such as the collective population of UP GRAIL, from assuming that everything in the present stream of Batfamily development is not what it seems? Everything we've ever held dear and patted down are being unearthed and spun around like Jack Kirby's corpse during Final Crisis: Riddler and Harley have gone straight, Poison Ivy is, unfortunately, not on a murderous eco-terrorist streak, The Yin and Yang of the Batman & Robin dynamic is being processed through negative lens.

Things are getting out of hand, the 70-year-old sand is finally shifting under our feet, and frankly, it's arousing me, getting me all hot & bothered. Think of it like getting your old Pontiac overhauled and replaced with the exact same Pontiac, only it's secretly Batman.

Yeah.

I meant for this post to have a point. Looks like I was sorely mistaken.

Also, the reappearance of Mistah J, and he's not smiling? Something is rotten in the city of Gotham...
