The Game

Also known as "Werewolf", Mafia is a game of deception and manipulation. An uninformed majority, the "town", is pit against an informed minority, the "mafia". The goal of the town is to lynch all the members of the mafia, and the goal of the mafia is to either eliminate the entire town or to have enough numbers to control the lynch.

Here's a nifty flash to help you out with the basic info such as how to play, common and alternative "modes of play", and roles, both common and rare, and what they do.

Playing over the internet in message boards is a totally different dynamic from playing in real life. You won't be able to rely on body language, facial expressions, speech manners and any other emotion that might give away a player's alignment. Communication isn't instant so people won't be making as much mistakes or slip-ups as they will have more time to think of appropriate responses. You will have to rely solely on what has been posted (or in some cases, what hasn't been posted) and your wits to discern who is with "town" and who is "mafia misspelled invitation". Games with power roles will help in your goal, whether it be but putting too much reliance on power roles can lead to a LAZYTOWN, an inefficient town once power roles are found out and are killed off, and to even backfiring with the complexity of some roles and with any cunning misspelled invitation member.

Check out that link I provided then come back and tell me if you're interested in playing. I'll keep it simple for the first couple of times so don't worry about any crazy roles or setups and themes. I'll need at least 8 players to start a game here. And activity is a must.

No activity = no discussion = no arguments/suspicions/detective work = no way for town to win = no fun

If this doesn't take off here, then maybe playing over YM, where things can go much faster, can be an option for anyone who's interested. If that still doesn't fly, then all I can do is invite anyone who's interested to play in other sites.

Yes, we played this one night. We also played this last year back in the GRAIL induction. Too bad you weren't there, Andrew.

Of course I'll be the mod since I've got the most experience! And unless you guys want to play on YM instead, mafia games on message boards usually last longer than a week. But now that I think about it... that's only usually the case with experienced players going through a lot of discussion so I guess games here will go much faster.

I'm going to ease you guys in so we'll be playing in basic vanilla setups and maybe I'll throw in a couple of basic power roles soon.

BUT NONE OF THIS WILL BE POSSIBLE IF THERE ARE ONLY 4 PEOPLE INTERESTED.

I don't think this is going to take off here so if any of you still want to play register here, head to the Queue section into the Newbie Game List topic and read the first post.

I've just registered there and it'll be my first time in that site as well so I'll be playing in the Newbie games as well to see how they play over there. You'll recognize my handle.

If you guys don't like the idea of playing with strangers from halfway across the globe, we can try to set up a game on YM but with just 5 players (I'll be the mod), we'll be limited to just playing Dethy. It's fun but not as fun as regular mafia with more players.

Here's the archive of most of the games I've played in in the board I frequent. All of them are "themed" games and they're arranged by the order of when we played those games. Some of them are fun reads, some of them are just facepalm-worthy augh-fests. Whichever the experience, you're bound to learn something useful if you really want to get into the game (augh).

And try to guess which user I am!

Desperation bump.

I swear, people, only two more players! My game on the site Joseph gave is going painfully slow. And I think we're playing with careless whisper idiots. Like actual careless whisper idiots. Not slavering internet trolls, not ignorant bags of neckbeard, but genuine mentally-challenged people.

Please.

HEY GUYS I'M PLANNING A DC-THEMED MAFIA GAME IT WILL BE EPIC BUT IT'S NOT FOR YOU GUYS

halp?

30-35 players

Here's what I have so far. It's a very rough draft (the second one since I scrapped the earlier 20 player idea) so I haven't checked for balance issues yet.

Town
Wonder Woman (Diana Prince) - Princess Jill-of-all-Trades
(100% Correct Cop Scan/Vig Shot/Bulletproof for one night/Doc Save)

Green Lantern (John Stewart) - Roleblocker

The Flash (Wally West) - Transporter

Detective Chimp - Detective

The Question (Charles Victor Szazs) - Cop (Was thinking of a way to alter this basic role to suit the "shamanistic" views of Vic Sage)

Lois Lane - Reporter

The Atom (Ray Palmer) - Hider

Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) - 1-shot Day Vigilante

Saturn Girl (Irma Ardeen) - Psychic

Booster Gold (Jon Michael Carter) - Best Buddies

Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) - Best Buddies

(they're basically same aligned lovers but with... a more suitable role name and I was thinking of a secret power for Booster Gold)

Black Canary (Dinah Lance) - Still thinking of a role that can factor in her Canary Cry.

Adam Strange - Vanilla (or maybe something else)

Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) - Vanilla

Hawkman (Carter Hall) - Vanilla

Wildcat (Ted Grant) - Vanilla

Nightwing (Richard Grayson) - Vanilla

Mafia
Darkseid - Godfather

Sinestro - Roleblocker

Gorilla Grodd - Silencer

Dr. Psycho - Framer

Cheetah - Tracker

Deathstroke - Assassin

Lex Luthor - Inventor

3rd Party
Superboy Prime - Bulletproof Serial Killer

Obviously need more characters/roles to fill out 30+ spots and there are only a couple of things that are locks here (mafia is actually way too overpowered). I'm even thinking of scrapping Darkseid from the game. AND YES, SUPERMAN AND BATMAN WILL NOT BE IN THE GAME. Probably.

THOUGHTS? SUGGESTIONS?

I'll probably only listen to character/role suggestions since I want this to cover the entire DCU and I can't say I'm an absolute expert at it. Still need suggestions for obvious roles like Doctor and normal Vigilante and the likes. Omnipotent/nigh-omnipotent beings for character suggestions are obviously not accepted.

How the hell do you plan to work with that? Bulletproof serial killer? careless whisper.

I'd think Oracle might be a good option. You know, she watches where people go. And since she's cool, make it two at a time. Very Happy

Dr. Midnite would be a shoe-in for your doctor.
Jonah Hex- Vigilante
Starman- Skitzo?
Cassandra Cain- Miller?

For the Question. Why not give him two perps to investigate each night? Also, make it so that Charlie can discern the specific role of the people he investigates. Too overpowered? Well too bad, it's the careless whisper Question.

Why not make it two parties of Mafia going against each other? Like Salvation run, but try to make the leader for the other Mafia party sensible and at least have a smidgen of charisma (i.e. not Joker; seriously, who in their right mind would side with Joker?).

SBP can easily lose by the player who gets role playing badly and getting lynched. That's the power of the entire town. They can't just rely on power roles. Besides, he can still get scanned and I might not give the player a safe list to work with. And misspelled invitation usually shouldn't be worried that they will get killed at night.

Dr. Midnite it is for doctor. Jonah Hex would be nice for vigilante but I'm not sure if it'll work exactly within the context of the game. Some of the characters super-powered beings that can take Superman-level punishment. Maybe someone a little more powerful?

As for that role suggestion for the Question, yes it's way too overpowered, especially considering the fact that there are enough scanners around.

I could use Oracle as a mason.

Adding another mafia faction when there's already a 3rd party in the SK will only muddle up the game and balancing the chances of winning the game for each side gets really screwed up.

And I think I will be scrapping Darkseid.

And I need more character/role suggestions.

Here's the final setup for Marvel mafia that will be hosted soon at the forum I hang out in. It's not mine but I asked the guy who made it for the setup to see how his game stacks up and if I can get some ideas. What do you guys think?

1. Doctor Doom – Mafia Doom of All Trades
2. Iron Man – Mafia Godfather
3. Magneto – Mafia Roleblocker
4. Venom – Mafia Poisoner
5. Red Skull – Mafia Vanilla
6. Phoenix – Self-Aligned Serial Killer
7. Captain America – Town Bodyguard
8. Professor X – Town Cop
9. Reed Richards – Town Creator
10. Invisible Woman – Town Doctor
11. Bruce Banner – Town Hulk
12. The Sentry – Town Inactive
13. Deadpool – Town Schitzo
14. Spider-Man – Town Spidey Senser
15. Wolverine – Town Stalker
16. Rogue – Town Thief
17. The Falcon – Town Vanilla
18. Howard the Duck – Town Vanilla
19. Spider-Woman – Town Vanilla
20. The Wasp – Town Vanilla

When it comes to brilliance, there can only be one who reigns supreme over all – and that is you. As a master of technology, mystic arts, diplomacy, science, and any discipline you set your mind to, you are truly deserving of the title “Jack of All Trades” – except, in your case, you rename the role after yourself. Why not?

You are Doctor Doom, Mafia Doom of All Trades.

Once per night you may undertake one of a variety of actions, each one with its own effects:

- You may look past the artificial guises of Doctor Strange and discern the true identity of one player (name cop).

- You may silence one player for a night; this does not, however, prevent them from voting (silencer).

- You may prevent one player from voting; this does not, however, prevent them from posting otherwise (paralysis).

- You may send in one unblockable kill and then dispose of the remains, preventing the player’s true identity from being revealed; this is in addition to the Mafia’s regular kill (though if you do this, you cannot send in the Mafia kill that night). You will not be told what the role is (janitor).

You may only do each of these things once. You win with the Mafia.

(NOTE: If Doom is roleblocked, his action is still considered “used.”)

Let’s be real here for a second – if your face weren’t a valuable commodity across the Marvel Universe, you would have taken a heel turn a long time ago. You were practically the villain in Civil War, after all, promotional messages about choosing sides be damned.

You are Iron Man, Mafia Godfather.

You’ve decided to step up your anti-communist political jingo and commit fully to the side of darkness. Because you’re, well, a superhero, you’ll scan as town. As a natural leader, you may also send in your teammates’ actions should they fail to do so (but you can’t override them if they do). You win with the Mafia.

Mutant supremacist terrorist – or rebellious anti-hero? Or, perhaps, a little of both? One thing is certain: as the master of magnetism and undisputed (at least in your eyes) master of all things mutantkind, you possess powers far above and beyond those of mere humans.

You are Magneto, Mafia Roleblocker.

Your natural magnetic shield can deflect and interfere with the actions of others. You may pick one player each night to roleblock magnetically; any night actions they undertake will not go through. You win with the Mafia.

The creation of an otherworldly parasite and a jealous, spiteful Earthling, you are considered one of the greatest threats to humanity through your ability to bond with and “infect” others. And that tongue! Gene Simmons would be proud.

You are Venom, Mafia Poisoner.

Once during the game, at night, you may poison another player. That player will succumb to the poison two days later and die (so if you poison on Night 1, the player will die Day 3). The alien force of this poison is so potent that it cannot be blocked – not by doctor protection, not by Bulletproofs, not by weird deus ex machina comic book shenanigans. (This is in addition to the regular Mafia kill.) You win with the Mafia.

Is it really flaming to call you a Nazi? I mean, that’s what you are – a repugnant, putrid piece of propaganda that even other villains are ashamed to work with. You should be proud!

You are the Red Skull, Mafia Vanilla.

Due to your reluctant comrades’ distrust of you, you have no special abilities… however, as a political mastermind, you are always scheming and plotting to come out on top. Good luck, comrade. You win with the Mafia.

The all-powerful Phoenix Force dwells within you, bringing out your true, potent powers… power enough to bring all of civilization to its knees. However, with great power comes great responsibility – or, in your case, mild insanity.

You are Phoenix (Jean Grey), Self-Aligned Serial Killer.

You must kill once per night; if you fail to send in a kill, it will be randomized for you. However, your former life as Jean Grey allows you to be perceived as town, and you will scan as such. Your massive Phoenix powers make you Bulletproof as well, which means you can’t be killed at night. You win when you are the last player standing.

You are the symbol of freedom, patriotism, justice, and virtue in the Marvel Universe. You wield your shield and martial arts prowess proudly. Best of all, YOU PUNCHED HITLER IN THE FACE.

You are Captain America, Town Bodyguard.

As the ultimate Marvel hero, you may choose one player to guard each night; should that player be targeted for death, you will die in their place. Due to your extensive combat knowledge and extreme desire to right wrongs, you will also take out their would-be killer simultaneously. You win with the Town.

(NOTE: Bodyguard is ineffective against Poison.)

Though confined to a wheelchair (sometimes), you remain one of the world’s most powerful mutants, with telepathic abilities above and beyond the scope of even some Omega-level mutants. You are, however, a manipulative manga by Kazushi Hagiwara!! who likes to use others for his own personal gain – but that’s neither here nor there.

You are Professor X, Town Cop.

Doctor Strange has disguised everyone so that you all look the same. However, due to your vast psychic powers, you can “read” people and see past the ruse. Once each night you may pick one player to investigate; you will learn if that player is misspelled invitation or town. You win with the Town.

Some time in the 60s (or whenever the SHIFTING TIMESCALE permits it to be) you led an expedition into space that granted you and your friends ‘fantastic’ (get it) powers – and though you can stretch and contort your body now, your greatest gift has always been your brain.

You are Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Town Creator.

You possess the most brilliant mind on Earth (and yet you can’t cure cancer >_>). As such, you may use your amazing intelligence to concoct a variety of useful inventions for the town. These inventions are:

- A short-term force field which allows the recipient to become Bulletproof for one night.

- A miniature copy of Cerebro, the mutant-finding helmet, which allows the recipient to scan one player to determine if they’re town or misspelled invitation.

- A small copy of the Ultimate Nullifier, which allows the recipient to roleblock one player.

- A suit of unstable molecules, which allows the recipient to protect one player from night kills for one night (as opposed to the force field, which makes the actual recipient Bulletproof).

If for whatever reason your inventions cannot be delivered (such as via roleblocking), you will still get to keep them and give them out some other night. You may give out as many inventions as you like per night; however, you cannot give more than one to the same person. The recipient may use the inventions whenever they please. You win with the Town.

Despite being known as “that chick who’s married to Reed Richards,” you’re a strong hero in your own right, with powers and skills all your own. And apparently a semi-nude scene in the movies. >_>

You are the Invisible Woman, Town Doctor.

Your ability to generate potent force fields will come in handy to protect people. Once each night, you may select one player to protect; you will surround that player with a massive force field, protecting them from outside kills. You cannot protect yourself. You win with the Town.

Extensive amounts of Gamma radiation turned you, a mild-mannered scientist, into a raging, super-strong being capable of huge feats of strength – but only when you get really angry. As a result, most of the time, you’re just a puny little dude.

You are Bruce Banner, Town Hulk.

For every Town death that occurs, you have a 10% chance of becoming the Incredible Hulk, with strength and powers beyond those of mortal men. Should you become the Hulk, you get two kills that must be taken immediately and on subsequent nights (if you fail to send in a kill, it gets skipped and you don’t get another one). Your durability as the Hulk also lets you become Bulletproof during this time. After your second kill has been taken, you will return to normal Bruce Banner for the rest of the game. The admin will notify you if and when you become the Hulk. You win with the Town.

The most powerful man on Earth isn’t cocky, self-assured or proud of his abilities – rather, he’s so afraid to misuse his powers that he spends most of his time hiding out on the moon cowering in fear of himself. Schizophrenic, delusional, easily swayed… this is you.

You are the Sentry, Town Inactive.

With powers beyond the scope of mortal men, you have the ability to do practically anything you can think of. However, due to your own fear of these powers, you may only do just one thing. At night, you can protect (like a doctor), kill (like a vigilante), roleblock (like a… roleblocker), investigate (like a cop), and turn yourself Bulletproof for a night. However, you can only do one of these things per game. The force of the Sentry’s powers also makes this action un-roleblockable. So choose wisely – you won’t get another chance. You win with the Town.

(NOTE: If the Sentry turns himself Bulletproof, he is still affected by Poison. Also, Doom’s janitor kill would still affect him.)

Wade Wilson is somewhat disturbed. Your cancer and your preternatural healing factor are in perpetual flux, you’re doomed to immortality by Death herself, and to top it all off, you’re aware you’re living in a comic book. I’d be a little disturbed if that applied to me, wouldn’t you?

You are Deadpool, Town Schitzo.

Once each night you must target a particular player (if you fail to send in a night action this will be randomized); you have a 25% chance of investigating, protecting, roleblocking, or killing that player. So says the Merc with the mouth! You win with the Town… somehow. >_>

“With great power comes great responsibility…” So spoke your Uncle Ben, many years ago, and those words changed your life and shaped you into the man you are (recent deals with the devil notwithstanding BUT WE’LL JUST PRETEND THAT NEVER HAPPENED). Ever since then, Peter Parker has used his powers for the sake of justice and good.

You are Spider-Man, Town Spidey Senser.

Your self-named “Spidey Sense” lets you know when trouble’s up; in the context of Mafia, this translates well to a “misspelled invitation detector.” Once per game, you may pick three living players (excluding yourself) and ask me if any of them are anti-town; I will only respond with “yes” or “no.” Choose wisely (great responsibility, remember) – you only get one shot. You win with the Town.

A killer. A monster. A hero. You’ve been called many things in your century-old lifetime, with many more to follow. You fight when you need to and kill if you have to. In short, you’re the best there is at what you do – and what you do isn’t very nice.

You’re Wolverine, Town Stalker.

You can use your animalistic senses to stalk people from a distance, which can prove very useful for helping the town ferret out power roles. Once each night you can choose to either track a player (which lets you see who they’ve visited that night, if anyone) or watch a player (which lets you see who’s visited them, if anyone). You win with the Town.

Your life has been a hell for as long as you can remember – your mutant powers are a curse in disguise, dooming you to a life without the touch of others. However, this experience has only served to make you a stronger person, giving you courage and strength in the face of adversity.

You are Rogue, Town Thief.

You possess the mutant ability to steal the powers of others; in the context of Mafia, this lends itself well to success. Twice per game, you may pick one living player to steal from; you will see a flash of their memory, or get a hint of their powers, or something useful to help identify them. You win with the Town.

The first African-American mainstream superhero, you share empathic links with birds and a bevy of bird-like abilities. A close ally to Captain America, you fight for justice and freedom.

You are the Falcon, Town Vanilla.

You have eyes and ears everywhere, though you possess no special abilities in the game. As a good-hearted supporter of superheroes everywhere, you win with the Town.

Some people are, well, people. But you… you’re a duck! A cigar-chomping one, at that!

You are Howard the Duck, Town Vanilla.

You’re trapped in a world you didn’t make… or something, I dunno, I never got into Howard the Duck. >_> Regardless, you’re a thinly-veiled pop culture parody with no special abilities. Good luck, duck! You win with the Town.

Some fans consider you useless, and for a while you were a Skrull or something (I don’t know, ask Wang or Silencer or somebody else), but you’ve always been an asset to Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Avengers.

You are Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Town Vanilla.

Possessed of superhuman abilities and superb hand-to-hand fighting skills, you are not one to be taken lightly. Though you have no special abilities in the context of this game, your greatest skill – discerning the truth – might be most valuable of all. You win with the Town.

Sometimes the smallest member is the most useful – and sometimes they get stepped on. Which path will you walk down?

You are the Wasp, Town Vanilla.

You have the ability to shrink yourself down to the size of, well, a Wasp, shoot little stingers at people, and do other wasp-like things. You also have SUPERB FASHION SENSE and a boyfriend who is ABUSIVE. You have no special abilities in this game, however, though your natural analytical mind will very likely come in handy. You win with the Town.

What Rogue steals:

Welcome to Marvel Mafia, a 20-player, closed-setup game. Ed Bellis is your moderator; should there be a question regarding the rules or a moment of weakness in which you simply must express your emotions, please direct your questions and outbursts directly to him. His email is therestwokratoses@yahoo.com.

Rules:

- Town wins when all non-town players are killed.

- misspelled invitation wins when all non-misspelled invitation players of their faction are killed (or when that outcome is inevitable).

- Any other factions will have their win conditions explicitly outlined to them and them alone.

- Please vote in the following format: <b>##Vote: Playername.</b> You may unvote any time when a lynch has not occurred with the same format: <b>##Vote: Playername.</b> You may also vote for “No Lynch” or “Time Extension” (which requires a majority vote) with the same format.

- The day ends when a majority of votes has been reached for someone. No posting after the deciding vote. If the day deadline is hit when there’s no majority, the person with the highest number of votes is automatically lynched. If there’s a tie, the day goes into sudden death mode, where the first new vote cast will decide the outcome.

- No deleting posts, even if you’re dead or spectating.

- No game discussion outside this thread (unless your role specifically allows it) – this includes “player pokes.”

- No posts discussing the game after I say stop talking or after night has fallen, whichever comes first. You can bump the topic and make contentless posts, but that’s it.

- If you’re dead or spectating, no posts with content.

- Don’t directly quote your role/conversations with me. Paraphrasing is fine.

- No cheating or trying to break the game.

- Play to win, please.

- Be active. If you’re not, you’ll be replaced.

- You don’t need to be “in character” or anything.

- No changing your mind on night actions – if you send something to me, you can’t change it after the fact.

- If you break these rules, you will be MODKILLED. No first chances, no exceptions.

Do you need fluff pieces written, too?

Who's going to be the Godfather then? Vandal Savage?
Dinah Lance's Cry can be used to stop lynches? And she's the JLA Chairwoman, too, so she can be a good Governor.
You scrapped Darkseid. I was about to suggest Orion for Vigilante.

Really? Saturn Girl? Not even Martian Manhunter? Saturn Girl?

Secret power for Booster Gold? If Ted gets targetted, he automatically protects him ala-Doctor (one-use only), and he can only protect him from being killed, not lynched.

I'll be writing the "fluff pieces" (the correct terminology would be "flavor text"). Still not sure on who'll be the godfather. I just might make it Lex. I'll take those Canary and Orion suggestions but I'm thinking that I should just keep Booster Gold the way he is right now.

The reason I'm using Saturn Girl instead of the obvious Martian Manhunter is that it's better to keep the players guessing and not outright believing certain claims through metagaming, making them rely more on what people actually do in the game. Part of that is not using some of the obvious major characters and giving it to the safe lists of the misspelled invitation. It's also to add variety into the game because as I've said before, I want this to span the entire DCU, not like what that other guy will be doing in Marvel mafia where he mostly kept it to the major players on Marvel Earth. So there's a rep for the Legion. I could maybe swap her for someone like Brainiac 5, though.

11. Bruce Banner – Town Hulk

Town Hulk. Hehe...
