I feel like getting my New Wave/Synth Pop/Techno/what have you on.
The Clash? New Order? REM? Sonic Youth? a-ha? (hahaha)
Name the classics. Recommend some overlooked artists. Discuss their questionable hair and unbelievably snug pantaloons.
Do these things and you shall receive my love (in the form of food, of cos).
Cheers 8D |

Duran Duran is one of those bands that seem to represent the 80's for a lot of people (probably because of their New Romantic image). First three albums is a must listen, especially Rio, beyond the third (or fourth) they just don't sound as good.
New Order is another favorite of mine. My favorite album of theirs is Technique, with Brotherhood as a close second. For singles, Blue Monday and Perfect Kiss are noteworthy.
For synthpop music, I would have suggested Ultravox, but I must honestly say that I haven't gone through most of their albums to give a solid opinion of their music. Even though, try Ultravox's Vienna album, I have gave it a play through, and it sound kinda nice.
A-ha. To be honest, even though I know a good deal of their songs, I don't have their whole discography, or even a solid album of theirs. For individual songs, I would list I've Been Losing You, The Sun Always Shines on TV and The Weight of the Wind as my favorites. I honestly never liked Take on Me. |

Wasn't even born in the 80s.
Technically, '89 is "80s", buuut
Early Sonic Youth was good. And then something happened (?????), and they turned into noise, noise, and let's see, more noise.
I only know the more famous songs by REM, so that probably doesn't count.
And I know three or four songs by Duran Duran.
Wait, what am I doing in this topic? _________________

I forgot Petshop Boys. Their album Please contains a lot of their upbeat and catchy stuff, especially my favorite song of theirs, West End Girls.

I seem to have overlooked that. I honestly haven't given them a listen through. In fact, the only song I know of theirs is People are People. I may as well listen to some of their stuff during the break. |

If you guys are going to make sweeping statements about this and that, you better damn well defend your claims. I, for one, want my your poetry to have some substance. _________________ love,

Depeche Mode is awesome. Personal Jesus. Everything Counts. Blasphemous Rumors. I even like their cheesier songs... *cough*Somebody*cough*... AND I FEEL NO SHAME IN ADMITTING THIS.
The only songs I know from Pet Shop Boys are West End Girls and What Have I Done to Deserve This, from New Order is Bizarre Love Triangle. I'll probably give these bands a try as I like what I've heard from them so far.
My favorite '80s band would have to be The Police. I've always been a fan of this group's music, at least before Sting went off to save the rainforest with his jazz/world music and to voice ecovillains in Captain Planet. Early Police was punk- and reggae-inspired though the later albums gradually included more jazz/pop influences. Their best album has to be Synchronicity, which is also their last and their most commercially successful one, though Reggatta de Blanc, which has my all-time favorite Message in a Bottle, comes in a close second. Stewart Copeland's syncopated drumming is nothing short of godlike either. [insert badly-edited concert video here]
Also: U2. Bono may be an obnoxious d-bag now (like Sting), but U2 made pretty powerful music in their prime. Sunday Bloody Sunday... I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For... Pride (In the Name of Love)... If you're looking for a class act, listen to U2.
Eurythmics is also quite good, if you're into synthpop, though they eventually laid off the synth and just became... pop (which also meant they became less, uh, avant-garde). Their videos are also fun to watch, like most products of the '80s but I'd like to think theirs are well-conceptualized (and often controversial; Annie Lennox likes to genderfrak.) Song choices: Love is a Stranger, Sweet Dreams, Here Comes the Rain Again, Would I Lie to You.
Tears For Fears, anyone? Sowing the Seeds of Love is simply magical. Also: Head Over Heels, Mad World and Shout.

Why did I just have a Juno flashback just now? _________________ "Men were men back then, I'll tell ya. If you wanted to do something private with another man, it wasn't gay, no. It was just two men...celebrating each other's strength." |

No, don't mention Juno to me.
During fourth year high, I was telling all of my cool and froody friends/family to listen to old Sonic Youth songs (so that when I say, "I love this song", someone could say "Hey yeah, I do too /hi5"), because their newer ones were crap, but they were all "myeh". And then Juno came out and now everyone has Sonic Youth's rendition of The Carpenters' "Superstar" in their playlist, and I want to slit some throats.
THROATS
But yeah, I do agree, most of their stuff is noisy. _________________
