Brian Azzarello
Lee Bermejo
"I didn't know the particulars as to why,
but he was...
Joker was being released from Arkham Asylum..."
So begins this searing look at the crazed world and cracked mind of the Joker... the crowned king of the Gotham City rackets.
Joker is getting out of the madhouse and, though he's laughing, he's not happy. While away, his fellow rogues have sliced and diced his chunk of the pie and sold it off for scrap - thinking he was gone for good. But now Joker's back on the street and eager to make Gotham bleed like it's never bled before.
During this long night of the soul, he'll cross paths with the likes of The Penguin, Two-Face, Killer Croc, Harley Quinn, The Riddler and, of course, The Batman... and heaven help them all.
Told through the eyes of his loyal (but naive) henchman Jonny Frost, JOKER is a true noir crime novel - a harrowing journey into a city of rain-soaked streets, dirty sheets and nothing but bad choices.
Absolutely ugly, and I mean that in a good way, Joker is yet another brilliant take at the disturbing psyche of one of the most memorable villains in fiction. Brian Azzarello works his expertise at the crime noir genre, as seen in his magnum opus "100 Bullets", into a dark and gritty tale of how the Joker does his business through the perspective of an idolizing two-bit goon, a take on the character of the Joker that's refreshing and yet seems oh-so-familiar. Lee Bermejo continues to amaze as he illustrates an incredibly gloomy and dirty world where all the grotesque of Gotham resides and rears its ugly, scarred and smiling face. You can just feel the grime rubbing off from the pages. The art is simply incredible.
Ironically, if I were to point to one weak point of the book, it's the obvious jumps in coloring/inking in the pages and panels. Not to downplay the efforts of the inker and the colorist, Mick Gray and Patricia Mulvihill, they did a good job themselves, but it's a little jarring to see the shift in some of the pages where some of the panels are traditionally inked and colored while some are expertly painted by Bermejo himself. This book would've been perfect had the whole thing been painted, giving it that consistency and not pulling us away from the "reality" and "gravity" that the painted scenes have. Word is that the higher-ups pushed this to come out this year, riding off the "TDK" and all things Batman hype this year.
And, no, this has nothing to do with the movie The Dark Knight. This graphic novel was already in the making 2 years ago, long before production photos of Heath Ledger in the costume and make-up came out. Joker here looking very much like Heath's interpretation with the scarred smile can be chalked up to coincidence or cosmic variance. Oh, and this also was supposed to be called "Joker: The Dark Knight", paralleling what Azzarello and Bermejo's work with another iconic superhero's arch-nemesis. Still, it is quite entertaining to imagine "hearing" Ledger's voice as you read through the story. Hamill takes a backseat for now!
Mind you that this is not in continuity so some of the character depictions here don't exactly fit into what you've expected of the characters. Think of this as an Elseworlds tale. It just doesn't have the tag on the cover.
Now go read, enjoy, be disgusted, and envy at the fact that I actually have the real thing in my own hands! that's where i got all the italicized and bold text at the top _________________ the word |

I was at PlanetX last week (15? Monday before party), looking for a TPB of this. I was asking for "the Joker one written by Azzarello", and they said they were out.
Good thing too, because now I can read the digital version! Hup _________________

There is no TPB of this... because there is no trade to collect... and this was only published in hardcover.
And it took me two months to finally get my hands on this. It was always sold out. _________________ the word |

Haha, that's probably why I didn't find it.
But when I went to Fully Booked today, they had one copy. The plastic was torn, and it didn't really show any inside art. And I didn't really have enough cash to buy it and still be able to buy gifts.
So, long story short, thanks for the soft copy. _________________

I was actually a bit annoyed when I found out about Fully Booked having it for P200 cheaper. But it was an AWESOME read anyway so the money was worth it.
Anyway, have you actually read it? What do you think? _________________ the word |
