No joke. You watch this, you will your poetry bricks. Torrent or visit your friendly neighborhood pirate asap. As always, check the quality of subtitles before buying. This one's a keeper not just for the kung fu moves, story's good too.

Ip Man is a semi-biographical film about a master of the Wing Chung style kung fu. The guy who taught Bruce Lee everything he knows.

Damn good logic right there.

JOSEPH. Recommend other good kung fu movies. For I wish to have a kung fun marathon and these are the things I have so far:

Ip Man
Kung Fu Hustle
Enter the Dragon
Kung Pow
Kung fu Panda

As you can see, 3 of the films are not very hard core...

Please add :

Five Deadly Venoms
- classic Shaw Brothers, 1970s. Political and brainy on it's own right without overtly belaboring its points. Homaged by Kill Bill's concept of Viper Assassination Squad.

Riki-Oh - ( 1991 ) You have to see this to believe it. I - oh, God. Alright, then. Gore Fu.

Dog Bite Dog ( 2006 ) - pitiless, brutish, contemporary martial arts flick that is grimy & unclean, and filtered through somewhat social realist/nihilist sensibilities. Just a wrenching, painfully bleak view of Hong Kong and the Third World, and Asia in general - forever damned with relentless social misery, poverty, and urban defenestration, and almost exclusively subsists on animalism. Always remembered this.

Muay Thai Chiaya ( 2007 ) - have not see; heard is great. Succeeds in both action as well as story structure and general filmmaking - both traits of which have largely been seen as Thai cinema's most major handicap.
And for those who've had issues with the Pramoedya Ananta Toer stuff, esp. in regards to the actual creative writing, you'll know what some of these critics are getting at. I'd call it general stench of art-film, provincial mindedness, but I digress.

Song Tam ( 2008 ) - Okay, the single, only thing you have to know about this flick, is it's got a scene where the lead kicks himself through a plane.
Haven't seen it yet, either, outside of the awesome trailer. Will manage.

Ong Bak 2 ( 2009 )- Have yet to see it; heard it's the next step.

Fighter ( 2008 )
- have not seen, Norwegian martial arts flick about a fricking Moslem lady ! Class, race, religious issues and all that.

and there's this your poetry major thing called Chocolate....

Well, sure, the HK folks would still tend to take the cake whenever they're on - they started this stuff, and their sophistication and filmmaking savvy are to reckon with. But the situation there is, basically, so long as both Donnie Yen and Wung Jin are working their asses off, the HK martial arts film survives. This is why others are slowly creeping out; other exemplary stuff have since been coming out of the woodwork from various shores and different regions, and are set to take over the scene soon - with back-to-basics, yet fresher work that is increasingly becoming more accomplished . Including story-wise ( cases in point : Muay Thai Chiaya, Fighter ).

Most of w/c, it seems, are now coming from Thailand, thus making it the de-facto epicenter of this type of work today. Particularly given their merciless, gung-ho, bone-crushing, chop-socky everyone seems to love more and more; as they've been unhampered by stupid wire-fu tricks, Zhang Yimou's fruity b.s. Yet it seems as though the martial arts film phenom may actually be relocating to the whole of Southeast Asia itself. Perhaps, it's only a matter of time, when we finally see proper eskrima films produced in the Philippines.

THAT IS NOT FAGGY ART-FILM your poetry PORN !

And it has begun. Malaysia has just produced it's ' very first martial arts flick ' Kinta 1888. Next is Indonesia ( Merlantau ). When do we get to kick the crap out of Cine(Di)Malaya ?

OMG. This I gotta see.

Thanks, Carlo. I'm a little hesitant about the non-Chinese films. I dunno, their martial arts is great but most doesn't have the pizzaz of the classic kung fu films.

I am, in fact, searching for those old school, lips are out of sync with really fast dubbed english, type of Kung fu films. So if you know any...
But I will look into your suggestions. Thanks. Smile

Kung-Fu Fighter, while it has Va Ness Wu as the lead (hahaha, bad acting, gtfo my kung fu movies), had some good fight scenes, especially in the end, where everyone was dishing out some kickassery. OH MY GOD, THAT CHIROPRACTOR, WHAT THE careless whisper, THAT CHIROPRACTOR (was he a chiropractor? a doctor of sorts). The end of that final fight scene did suck real bad though, as if they didn't know how to end the whole thing. I watched this even with bad subtitles, the fight scenes are that good.

I AM GAME for this Saturday. I think. Details, details, men. I can bring my Ip man copy unless Joseph's copy is better. The text things? At the beggining and end of the film, mine doesn't have subtitles for the text screen things. But everything else works.

Smile

Honestly, Aaron, I was staring at my calender in confusion, the themesong to Twilight Zone playing in my head when I read your reply. Laughing (WTF at the emoticon. The upperlip shakes, not the jaw. I assume this is the 'laughing' icon, not the 'having a seizure' icon)
