First thunder.

Will comment later. Mixed reviews at 4chan, but here's to hoping it's not that bad.

SO HOW 'BOUT THEM COMMENTS

Anyway, I actually find myself nodding my head along with just about everything Barry AND Bart are saying. And I think there was just a bit too much exposition and Barry cock-sucking in this issue. How many issues are there in all? I don't feel that same wonder I had when I first read GL:Rebirth. This just feels... a bit too messy for me.

I was abstaining from RAGE this Lenten season, so let me just say that it was a disappointing first issue. As much as I love Barry as a Flash and as a character--and I realize that this is his much vaunted "Rebirth" title, where he gets reintroduced to the mainstream DC superhero roster--Flash: Rebirth just didn't cut it as a first issue.

It's not that my expectations weren't met. On the contrary, I had it pictured in my mind that Barry's morally objective creed will pose some difficulty and will create pockets of discussion among the superhero populace, with Wally West and probably even some of the JSA taking up a more tolerant standpoint. Barry's a cop--and not just a cop, he's a SILVER AGE cop, with an indelible sense of black-and-white good and evil--and as opposed to his legacy, he won't be as cavalier about the whole chumminess with the Rogues thing.

I don't know. For a five-issue story, there's still a lot to tell. Barry cock-smoking aside, Rebirth can very well redefine how everyone sees the Speed Force, and with it being an integral power conduit for all the DC speedsters, this definition of an amorphous power source is LONG overdue.

I'm still waiting for the Rogues to figure in this, though. If you remember from FC: Rogues Revenge #3, where the your poetry hit the fan, Captain Cold specifically said that if Barry was to return, they'd have a major problem on their hands since, "[Barry] ain't like the kid who took it up after him. He never gave us a break." And with Abra Cadabra dusting off his puppets, expect to see a huge Rogue revival in the near future.

As for giving Barry a GRIMDARK origin story, I thought it was a pretty your poetry move on Geoff Johns to give Barry daddy issues. HOWEVER, if he manages to flesh out his childhood, I may be willing to cut him some slack. I'm not one to pull NERD RAGE out of a hat, but I thought it was disrespectful and juvenile of Johns to create character development out of tragedy (which Barry already has in spades). Very Zoom of him.

Yeah, I was wondering about that part with his dad. I haven't read his previous origin story but I knew something was wrong with this one.

Not really much has been said about his childhood, so Johns has free character exposition passes. But it seemed pedantically Freudian of him to tie Barry's unshakable moral creed to childhood trauma.
