Personally, I think the movie just sucked on its own big time without the help of whatever outdated ideals there are. However, there may be something about Superman's goody-goody two shoes-ness that's a bit of a yawn. Not saying he has to be dark and edgy like Batman but kinda give him a new angle to work on. For me that's an interesting aspect about the future (older) Superman.
But if anyone killed Superman, it's Bryan Singer.
