This summary doesn't even remotely encapsulate the weirdness that is Franken Fran, which, I do warn you, is one of those series that errs distinctly on the side of gruesome. While character designs, gag plots, and character stereotypes are often recognizably animu, the author seems to absolutely delight in turning otherwise ordinary situations upside down, making use of Fran's talents and an absolutely vicious sense of cruelty. A lot of resolutions to conundrums are solved in rather unorthodox (and occasionally stomach-turning) methods.
Fran herself might appear to slot neatly into the typical 'mad scientist' and 'genki girl' stereotypes, but instead of working against the gore and horror of the rest of the story, it's played straight, and acts as a nice touch of irony.
Be forewarned that there aren't a whole lot of 'happy endings' in this manga, and the graphicness of quite a few scenes might be more surprising/disturbing than you'd expect. Despite the apparent simplicity of the stylistic choice, the writing and the art work together really well, and if there isn't at least one 'episode' that leaves you with a mental image that haunts you, I'll be surprised.
