destroy apathy and complacency and be involved and dynamic with regard to
pressing issues that confront our university and our people. It calls for the

Post subject: The ACLE Proposal |
|
|
Code: | The UP Graphic Arts in Literature (UP GRAIL) is a college-based organization dedicated to the academic discussion and promotion of comic books and other forms of illustrated literature, both local and foreign, in the belief that the medium provides a unique and critical literary standpoint.
As such, UP GRAIL recognizes the need to take a stand in providing alternative means of education, thus allowing the fresh minds of the university to not stay confined within the figurative and literal walls of the classroom. In keeping with this year’s theme of “Never Enough: No Limits. No Boundaries,” UP GRAIL would like to present to you our proposal for our Alternative Classroom Learning Experience topic for the first semester of AY 2009-2010, tentatively titled “World[ly] Comics: The Portrayal of Sexuality and Gender Issues in Illustrated Literature.”
This ACLE would consist of a discussion and content analysis of how gender issues are handled and portrayed in the comics medium, as well as how the medium can be used to further explore these topics and raise awareness about realities involving the sexual issues in our society. Speakers from the field of comics will be invited to participate and facilitate the discussions. There may also be film clips from film adaptations of comics shown during the lecture. |
I cooked this up ten minutes ago. Will submit the letter tomorrow (which is the deadline). What do you guys think? Let us start gathering speakers and facilitators now. We can invite people who aren't necessarily comics folk, too, right?
And to clarify: I kind of wanted the focus of this ACLE to be stuff like Women in Refrigerators syndrome, homosexuality in comics, objectification of women and stuff like that. What do you guys think? |

Always an interesting discipline, gender studies. I'll try to get Mary Ann to extend her services. _________________ love,

Gender studies are always interesting! Since I've just finished reading Y: The Last Man it seems even more relevant and intriguing a topic...
So long as we don't get crazy one-boobed radical feminists coming in. |

Not sure if gender studies is Mary Ann's specialty, ask her just in case. Try Judy Ick and Neil Garcia, the bards of gay lit in the department.
I highly recommend Del but not sure how to contact him. He did that gay comics thesis a few years back. I'll try to find his number.
Most probably I just missed it when I skimmed through details but have you guys decided on gifts for the speakers? _________________ Shut up and lemme think for a moment. |

Um, not yet, actually. We really ought to start now.
Also:
Here are some reminders for your guidance.
1. The Student Summit will be held on July 22, Wednesday, at the College of Education Theater, from 1-5pm. Attendance by the organization is mandatory as an ACLE Requirement.
2. The scheduled Educational Discussion (ED) on Charter Change for tomorrow, July 21 Tuesday will push through. It will be held at 5:30-7:00pm, at Vinzons Rooftop, 4th Floor, Vinzons Hall. This ED will be credited to the organization' s ACLE requirements. Please send at least one (1) member from your organization to attend. |

Thank you, Joseph and Hannah 2, for helping in fulfilling the requirements for ACLE.
Guys, we need to buy the material requirements next week. Can we have a contribution? I think it's not gonna cost that much anyway (15 bluebooks, 5 black pens, a yellow pad). I can shoulder the blue books, I guess.
Also, we need to get. Speakers. NOW. HELP ME.
Job, posters din! Sorry if I'm asking you to do too many things. |

Thanks.
Our ACLE Topic has been approved: http://updusc.multiply.com/journal/item/27
I take umbrage, however, at these people's lack of appreciation for braces and wordplay.
It's World[ly], not Worldy. |

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS: Thanks to Joseph, we were able to get the yellow pad and 5 pens. I provided the 15 blue books. I already submitted these to the USC office. All we need now is the GE book. Marion, please do not forget the GE book AND the banner on Tuesday. Thank you.
SPEAKERS: I talked to Sir Emil, he said he'd do his best. He was very interested about the topic and said he'd focus on Western comics.
I also talked to Del (GRAIL senior member) because his thesis was about homosexuality in comics or something related to that. He said to track down Prof. Reposar (yowza!) because she knows more about the subject.
How about our other speakers, Lukas and co? |
