Amazing.
I kid you not, citizens. If you want to get drunk on life once again, read this, mull on it, read it again, then finally put it down. It's a glimpse into that tiny little spark of goodness in humanity shown through the eyes of an alien; it's the heart-wrenching twilight of a Silver Age icon; it's a meditation on the life and death of not just that surfer dude in silver, but a cosmic entity who dedicated what remainder of his life to maintaining the right for all sentient beings to be free. In other words: It's Jesus in Space. Or Optimus Prime
As the title may suggest, it's a farewell to the one of the most complex yet sadly under-written characters of the company. It happens outside canon, which is a good move on the part of Straczynski; by chronicling these events beyond the constrictive machinations of the Marvel editors, he managed to play with the idea of a major character death, weave an evocative plot around it, cast down the fetters of continuity and just simply tell his story.
J. Michael Straczynski is in his element here, undoubtedly. His style is pervasive and contemplative; crafting the persona of the Surfer with a poignant sigh. He manages to avoid the eulogic pitfall that some writers fall into when telling a story about death and dying. Sure, some passages manipulate your emotions, cruelly and unabashedly, but it sounds right, it sounds passionate. In the end, you can either be uplifted by the whole thing, or sapped by the weirdly cathartic experience. Esad Ribic's fully painted pages are breathtaking. The washed out colors contribute to the reflective atmosphere, perfectly complementing Straczynski's prose.
I can't say anything more about it. To add to what's already there would be defacing its message; I just can't do it any justice.
Enjoy. _________________ love,

Loved it. Spidey looks and feels a lot like Ross and Busiek's Spidey. Heh.
I saw the ending coming, though (well, part of it anyway). It was a great read. |

I really like Spidey's talk with Norrin there. It brought a humble, well-grounded nobility to the Surfer's search for peace, and his suggestion in Surfer's effort in showing the whole world the true feeling of freedom for five minutes made me misty-eyed.
The ending was, of course, obvious. Surfer dies. "How does he go out?" is the more pressing question. _________________ love,

Yeah, that part pretty sweet. It's a classic sending off; mythology-style. _________________ love,
