Well, I guess this comic is gonna get reviewed at some point, so....

I'm basically sticking with much of Warren Ellis' short description/ review of the Gerry Alanguilian ( writer/ artist ) opus, which was : "A marvellous little black book of lost love, unhinged hatred for everything everywhere, and making things right using only guns. " Yeah, yeah. That's the one ! " Making things right using only guns. " Quite inaccurate ( i.e. I remember him using a telephone booth, and his own bare hands on somebody else's throat, too ). But is what got stuck in my mind the most.

’Coz, Wasted is, for the most part, you know, that. Basically a glimpse of some mad, ruthless, cowering man-child being totally incapable of handling his feelings; who, after his woman abandoned him abroad for some American, decided to throw a murderous fit across our society, punctuated by insane, random acts of terror against various careless whisper, unrestrained. That is, until it all succumbs into the requisite melodrama; at which point he finally gets to profess the totality of his ' love and devotion ' to that dear lovely he stalked all the way up to the top floor, dead bodies in tow - and upon a rain of bullets. Unfortunately, they all went towards his direction.

The relentless, pistol packing, swath of anger; collapsing into pity party. It's about ' heartbreak ', after all.

Fun to watch the mayhem, while it lasted....

Okay then. It has flaws and stuff. The dialogue bothered me a bit. I always maintain this would have sounded better in Tagalog.

But, it was always that denouement w/c bothered me.

The comic did not faithfully follow on through his character’s madness ; having gone limp and rather timid at the last, crucial moment, in taking that steady, maniacal bent to it's logical conclusion. Which I felt robbed the story of potential, actual resonance, much less efficacy as a brutal, remorseless tale in its own right ( separate from where the writer is at, or who that person is ).

Simply because it didn't make a lick of sense.

A guy so overheated in mass murder like that, whose brutal rampage, and racked up body count have all but probably shot up his brain, wouldn't have really been able to emotionally pull out of that state, and suddenly wax calm and lament, like he did. Especially when he’s still got a fresh gun in his hand.

I mean, he shot down a politician, a ruthless rat manga by Kazushi Hagiwara!! who's killed his father, and who's loomed, presumably, over his entire fate and future all this time, burying to the mordant station such as where he is now. You don't transcend or eliminate that major psychological blockage, and suddenly quit at the immediate moment after that , now that you're on such a roll. It wasn't even that dude he been prattling on around here about in the first place.

He would probably have pointed the gun on her and her hubby, and would have done something else real different with it.

It's how consequences would have looked like.

But, it’s not what happens, and that’s what ends up defining the product. In the end, ' Wasted ' is not highly bent on being consistent with its character's actual psychology, or adding up more properly as an action piece, or dealing with its issues of construction. It's merely all about the author's feelings at the moment. Just him bleeding out his personal romantic prostrations onto the world. Though, at least he gave us cool imagery, and memorable kills along the way.

It's really just guignol ‘ Black Book’ pissings of somebody. Take from it what you will.

****
To me, it's always been this laconic imagery of a misanthropic freak in fetus recoil, stuffing bullets in his backpack. That's always a keeper.

Carlo. Recommend me awesome komiks to read. Frankly, I'm a neophyte in that realm, since I've never really bothered to check out our existing material. I'm curious, though.

The request extends to other well-read GRAILees as well.
