Post subject: Murder Mystery: General Rules and Conduct |
|
|
General Rules and Conduct
1. Come in costume and in character. The more effort you put into your role, the more the mystery will come alive. Make sure to read up on your character and take note of the relevant information contained in your dossiers as this will help you interact with the other players.
2. Please be PROMPT. The game will start at [TIME] so please be there well before then so there's time for you guys to change and be given final instructions. If you are going to have a problem with transportation, tell the organizers beforehand so that they can find out how they can help you.
3. Please contribute your share to the potluck and the prize money pool (100 pesos). The potluck sign-up sheet will be posted soon so you can pick what you want to bring.
4. Prizes:
o You got it, Sherlock – A life-sized resin figurine of a black man's penis for solving the mystery (or a secret!)
o Putting on the Ritz - A lock of Lukas Velunta's hair for the best costume, voted by the participants (or another secret!)
o The Real McCoy – One night of romantic loving with Job Duanan and the whip of your choice for the best actor/actress, voted by the participants (or even more secrets!)
5. Keep all information about your character and your relationship to other characters to yourself. Do not talk about/ excitedly gush over/ mention anything that could prematurely give away anything about your character. You can tell people who you are, but nothing else before the game starts to keep things fair for everyone.
Game Mechanics
1. The objective of the game is to find out who the murder is. Nowhere is it mentioned that you are truly guilty or innocent. Use the clues to figure out who the killer is. Yes, it could even be you.
2. You are not allowed to lie about any information given to you unless otherwise stated in the cue cards. Note that not everyone has complete information about themselves so that everyone is kept guessing who the killer is. In the event that contradictions arise between two or more characters, this will mean that someone is lying and someone is telling the truth and it will be up to the players to figure out which is which. You are, however, allowed to share/conceal any information you gained personally, from your observations etc. but are not allowed to twist this information to mislead other players.
3. Reveal & Conceal Clues. Some players are given Reveal/ Conceal Clues in their Character Profiles (check the Information Control Section of your file). If you receive a Reveal Clue, it is your job to get this information out. Find opportunities, in character, to get your reveal clue out. Meanwhile, if you have a Conceal Clue, you will try to avoid the subject, however you cannot lie about the clue. Be careful, however, about talking smack about people while they are around. For example, if you have a reveal clue that a certain person is sleeping around, you wouldn’t want to say it in front of that person, or to the person he/she is sleeping around with.
4. Get as much information as possible. It will be to your advantage to find out everything you can about the other guests at the party, as well as paying attention to any events that may occur within the night.
5. At certain intervals in the game, characters will be given scene cards. These will contain instructions regarding a scene for you to act out. Give yourself time to absorb the instructions as there will be time for it and it is better that you act them out accurately and with conviction so that the whole experience is more real. More importantly, these scenes will drive the mystery forward because the information contained in them is crucial to solving the mystery. If you have a question about a cue card, just call for a pause and ask Lukas, Job or Joseph for help.
6. Final accusations: Be careful, when making a final accusation. Once you have made one, you aren’t allowed to make another one until everybody else has had a chance to make an accusation as well. Be guided by the “Motive, Means, Opportunity” check list we have provided. If you can, do your accusations in character as it will make things more interesting. However, if it is out of character for you to do so, if you are accusing yourself or someone allied to you for example, just announce that you are making a final accusation out of character and proceed. _________________ love,
