TV Tropes explains what the Vocaloids are more concisely than I ever could, so I'll leave that link there as an educational guide to the uninformed (or just as a potential time-waster for compulsive link clickers. \o/)

It's likely you've at least run into one of these before, if only in random scattered pieces of fanart and the like, but the Vocaloids are pretty ... idk if iconic is the word, but they seem to produce the same kind of obsessive fan-following as, say, Touhou project. That said, since this is coming from the country where there are people that happily anthropomorphize operating systems, a fandom based around vocal synthesizers that already comes with anime-style mascots isn't much of a stretch.

Japanese video site NicoNicoDouga turns out to be the perfect sort of community for this fandom, since it allows them to upload their musical compositions, remixes thereof, and music videos, to say nothing of people writing song responses back and forth and... anyway the point is that people have used the software to make a lot of fun (if often robotic-sounding, depending on the skill of the composer) songs, usually with some kind of storyline.

Fortunately, many of them are easily available with English translations on YouTube, so have a linkdump of my favorites. \o_O/ Share your own, if you have any! Songs that are linked or supposed to lead into each other won't be uh separated.

I've only recently gotten into the Vocaloids thing...hence this very off-timing post.

Songs I like so far:

SPICE! - Kagamine Len
Dear You (cover) - Kaito
Dancing Samurai - Kamui Gakupo

WHATTHELOLZ? They all have k in their names...

I don't like the video of SPICE! but the song is catchy... I also won't bother putting a link to Dear You, since there is no animation...[/url]
