Post subject: What Are You Currently Reading? |
|
|
To get this board up and running, we'll start off with a simple topic!
I am currently reading "The Man in the High Castle" by one of the pioneers of science fiction, Philip K. Dick. The story is basically about a world where the Axis powers won, how the world is split between Japanese and German rule, and the lives of a couple of American citizens living in the same country cut in half with the West Coast under the Japanese and the East Coast under the Germans.
It's been a pretty interesting read so far but it seems to deviate in terms of "theme" from what little I've read from Dick as this seems to be a very politically-driven book as opposed to the much more sci-fi oriented works he's done. I'm only around 1/4 of the book so I've a long time til I come up with a solid "read" on this one.
So, what are YOU reading? _________________ the word |

I'm re-reading the Lord of the Rings by That Dude. It had the extended appendices so I couldn't resist borrowing it. It's still pretty good the second time around, considering I read it in second year high school.
Read: Samwise Gamgee is a badass. He can use apples as deadly projectiles, create 9 stanza ballads out of thin air, and the deepest, darkest secret the Ring has shown him? A garden that spans the whole of Midgard.
I rest my case. _________________ love,

I've been trying to read The Dream Life of Sukhanov by Olga Grushin for aaaages but I keep on getting distracted.
That is actually the case for almost every book I start. Damn the internet!
But, yeah, as soon as I'm done with that book I think I'll go back to reading Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. I would bear his babies, no lie. He is Jewish, I believe. |

I love Jonathan Safran Foer so much that I'm going to take him behind the middle school and get him pregnant. _________________ "Men were men back then, I'll tell ya. "Bluebeard" by Kurt Vonnegut.
Incredibly slow, even for Vonnegut. The only thing that is (supposed to be) keeping me reading is finding out what he's hiding inside his barn. This is the kind of novel you'd want to have in hand when you are having a hard time sleeping.
Also, "Ultraviolins", a compilation of poems and short stories by Khavn de la Cruz. So far, I've only read a few of them. Lots of swearing. And mentioning of certain body parts.
Oh yeah, Job's post reminds me that I have to read The Two Towers for class. _________________

Oh hey, I read "The Man in the High Castle" and while it's a type of "what if" story I remember thinking it was a bit too unlikely though SF stories around that time tend to be like that. It had that B movie plot feel to it.
I'm reading "3001 Odyssey" again because I forgot where I last left off. It feels a bit anticlimactic but I'm still in the seventh chapter. Hopefully it might not feel too normal like 2061 (which was a lot like Clarke's other book "A Fall of Moondust" but a lot less boring). I guess I miss the suspense and thrill I got from 2010.
Also I'm reading more materials for my thesis but that hardly counts. I'm up to my eyeballs in samurai history. _________________ Shut up and lemme think for a moment. |

Famous Last Words by Timothy Findley.
That book that I bought in the discount bookstore almost a year ago before we saw The Dark Knight. Just started reading it again after I stopped... back in chapter two. Midway through chapter three now!
What great progress I'm making! _________________ the word |

GNARL! by Rudy Rucker.
Collection of short stories. Some of them are p. good, and it's nice to be able to understand some of the scientific concepts (even if most of it is made up). Others are ok I guess. Also it is Science Fiction, so my nipples dance with glee. _________________

Running with Scissors, Augusten Burroughs.
Haven't bought anything for myself in a while, so I took some cash from my DS fund(sorry, Lukas), and bought this guy's memoir. Three chapters in and I'm surprised at how flippant he is, and how it amazingly draws you in, like that three-hour coffee date with someone you used to know, or like a parade of organ grinders at the Turkish bazaar.
Haven't watched the movie yet, so hush your sweet little mouths. _________________ love,

Cave & Shadows by Nick Joaquin
Politics and religion clash in this whodunit that builds up on a classic Folk Catholicism/mysticism and good ol' family values/tribalism background that helped define our culture today, traveling through the pages of our pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial history, vividly constructing both fictional and real places in time juxtaposed in a way that they seamlessly bleed in together, with "native foreigners" up front in the story helplessly trapped in machinations of the powers that be whose goals ultimately fall into the questions of morality and what it is to be nationalistic and be truly Filipino. _________________ the word |

Glad you asked!
Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
Only halfway and already there's slitting open cat stomachs, picking their hearts out and eating them! And a lot of mysteries, since I still have no idea what's going on. _________________

Not yet, Nakata is still hitching rides to get "across the bridge".
The Johnny Walker scene would look glorious on-screen, I imagine. I never do that for things I read, but it just struck me as something that would be powerful on-screen. *slice* _________________
