This is the unofficial continuation of the 'Size of the Earth'.gif Uncle Gravy posted.
Sciencefags, help me out here. Now from what I understand of this picture, some galaxies are so effing huge that it actually defies our current understanding of physics. Follow? Now, if that was the case, our interpretation of reality, a fundamental law of nature, could be wrong. Wouldn't that make your poetry unravel? And even if it didn't, wouldn't that make physics as a SCIENCE useless in trying to decipher what's REAL? I wish I felt like Lex Luthor at the end of All-Star Superman right now, just to get a glimpse of what exactly an omnipotent being sees.

I wouldn't be surprised. Many scientists state that in areas of space beyond our observation, many of the laws of physics may greatly differ and some of the physical constants we take for granted may apply (but in different values) or may not apply at all. The fact that we can perceive a galaxy, whose size should be physically impossible, may just prove how little we know about this universe.
Now to what you have said. Does invalidating current theory and perception of the physical world would cause your poetry to happen? Not really, it just shows that we need to rethink parts of the framework of physics in order to make sense of our observations. This may cause a momentary lapse of mind careless whisper among the scientific community, but they will survive, and so will the science. Unless of course, something comes along that invalidates the basis of physics as a whole. As for what is real? I really wouldn't know any better than you.
All in all, you shouldn't worry too much. Everything's fine in our neck of the woods. There is no war outside the walls of Ba Sing Sei. |

Sorry for the late reply, but I ought to give my 5 cents on this.
Basically, I'm going to support Patrick's post, plus a little bit of mine.
Physics, like any science, is NOT absolute. It is a natural one, but that doesn't mean that theories of said science cannot be disproved. In fact, Newton's laws were actually disproved by Einstein's Relativity Theory. So keep your socks on. Yes, we are small, but we are also larger than a lot of things. Also, that large galaxy just proves how relative everything is, and how we should rethink certain ideas. Blah blah.
Another note is that that image is coming from thousands of years ago. So that galaxy might not exist anymore. Or it got bigger.
Understand that I don't really see why you guys are scared. I mean the picture doesn't even explain why humongous galaxy defies physics. It just says it does.
Beh, I'll just scare you guys moar.
There are probably a lot more galaxies like that out there. I mean, that was only 1/10th of the moon, and like the moon is only a small area of our sky. JESUS CHRIST MILLIONS OF PHYSICS DEFYING GALAXIES!!!!!!11 _________________
