The Much Forgotten Watchmen Review
Where I feebly explain why it is difficult to review and proceed to do so anyway then, regrettably, end up ranting

What can I say about Watchmen that hasn't been said before? There are a lot of reviews out there discussing its art, plot, story, social relevance, comparison and contrast to the movie, the author and his writing process; tons of words and words for just this comic. Still, that is no excuse for not writing a review (my review) of Watchmen.

A great disadvantage of submitting something late is that people expect it to be above par to, I suppose, make up for not giving it in on time.

I just want to remind you that disappoinments are a natural thing in life.

Watchmen received critical acclaim, which is another fancy way of saying praise from those people whose opinions apparently matter. A lot of people found it awesome as well, but as I've seen, most of those who read it and liked it actually read it because they found out a movie was coming out. A movie based off a graphic novel that received critical acclaim. Those are the same people who thought the movie was beyond awesome and are totally spazzing over it like it was the best thing since toast. I read it before the movie came out. Before plans of the movie came out. Those people probably don't even understand the politics going on behind the scenes between DC and Alan Moore (bear with me as I try to choke back my inner pretentious hipster). That movie, I swear- had Moore been dead, his grave would be flippin' balls. Of course, Moore can never die. The great wizard can only pass on to another stream of consciousness. Probably on the day they burn him for being a warlock. He will ride a unicorn into the sunset of some dimension.

ANYWAY, as I was saying, Watchmen piqued the interests of many people, regardless of whether they read it or watched it first. If I were forced to choose, the book was better. Of course, like I always tell my friends who start hating on the movie, you have to detach yourself from the comic when watching the movie. You don't ruin an awesome comic with a great movie, and vice versa (another case in point, Wanted). Unavoidable as it is nowadays to talk about the comic without mentioning the movie, I must move on.

Film and all aside, Watchmen was a very interesting read. Firstly, the whole idea of a superhero in real world terms was something I never really thought about. Sans Dr. Manhattan, all the heroes were quite human in terms of physical aspects. Most of the other comic book heroes are supernatural, like Superman. The Minutemen was a group of ordinary schmucks who decided to take the law into their own hands. In spandex. Not that great an idea in my unsolicited opinion, but hey. It worked for them. The whole idea of who was a superhero and whatbecame of them. What they were reduced to. And what it took to become them. And I'm not onlytalking aboutphysical stuff here. There's also all this mental/psychological training you have to go through that can lead you to be an uncaring manga by Kazushi Hagiwara!! (The Comedian) or an uncaring smarmy manga by Kazushi Hagiwara!! (Ozymandias). It could also lead you insane, as what happened to Rorschach eventually, after coming upon a really horrible crime scene that left him traumatized then dead cold to the world.

Second there's all the images and recurring themes that appear throughout the comic. One of the most glaringly obvious is the smiley face with the blood smear. Another is the phrase "Who watches the watchmen" which is, really, what the book is mostly about.

One of the other things that I liked about Watchmen was the Tales of the Black Freighter, which is another story within the story. In one chapter, the story actually parallels what was happening to the characters in the Tales, albeit not exactly, but close enough.

There were also those very confusing strips involving seemingly random scientists, artists, etc. who were trapped on an island making something. I like how it only became clear to us in the end what the whole deal was with the island.

All in all, I think the depth of Watchmen is something that requires a very long paper to explain and probably a thorough knowledge of political issues during the Cold War, phychology, psychoanalysis, and art techniques to appreciate every aspect of it.

Or you can be like me and choose to appreciate only certain aspects since this requires much less previously acquired knowledge to do so.

C'mon. You don't have to be a super genius to appreciate it.

It wasn't my least favorite part, but I did love that tigerthing.
